3rd Quarter 2024 Report from EMI / Mahi Pono

The report is now in our Resource Library, on this website. You can download it here, or view it here.

Of interest:  five Mahi Pono irrigation wells were in use during Q-3 2024 and all reported water quality that had potable levels of chlorides (salt)  however,  wells 3.9 and 12 have tested with significant levels of other pollutants in the early 2000’s. All these wells except well 9 are in the Pa’ia aquifer. Well 9 is in Kahului aquifer/

The table on page 16 of report  shows that well pumping varied greatly from under 1.5 mgd in January to over 10.5 mgd in August (see the map, below).

  • Well #2 (Paia pump 2)  state well #  5323-01
  • Well #3 (Kihei shaft ) state well # 4825-01
  • Well #9 (Pu’unene)    state well # 5224-02
  • Well #12 (Ku’au pump)  state well  # 5522-01
  • Well#13 (Pa’ia Mill)   state well # 5422-01

Historically (2016 during last year of  sugar cane cultivation)  only  wells  4. 8 and 19 were pumped. these are not being used currently

before that: in 2014 and 2015 between 4 and 11 wells were pumped- depending on season.

• For those interested in how much water is withdrawn from Haiku area streamsthe Table on page 16 of report has a column labelled

East Maui Surface Water Gained from Area Between Honopou and Maliko that gives total amounts. we have no way of knowling how accurate these numbers are.

• Supporters of the Community water authority may want to ask that condition 9 of the Revocable permits be ammended to cleasrly indicate that the CWA would also have access through coordination with the State Lands division. It current says:

“Permittee shall cooperate with CWRM and the Department’s Division of Aquatic Resources (DAR) in facilitating studies, site inspections and other actions as necessary to address the streams that water may be diverted from under this revocable permit.”
